This exciting reading program initiative began several years ago and ran in conjunction with various schools within the Upper Canada District School Board. In 2015, the program was adapted by Riley Shaw and Stephen Joudoin, who were teaching at the Canadian International School of Hefei in China. They developed a program titled, “Building Libraries Through Literacy”. Since returning to Canada, Riley has continued this program at St. Lawrence Academy and this year, partnered with Vanier Public School and Canadian Aid for Chernobyl to provide a renovated library and student lounge at Chausy Regional School #1.

The Principal of the school was quoted in the local newspaper saying, “From Canada there came book shelves, chairs, tables, sofas for comfortable and enjoyable reading. Modern multimedia equipment was purchased for conducting teaching activities, holding school events and watching movies. The new reading room will become an integral part of school cultural life. The cozy atmosphere will encourage our students to read more and help develop love for reading as one of the most enjoyable pastimes.”

Building Libraries Through Literacy benefits not only the children in the schools receiving the books, but also the children raising the funds often develop a love of reading through this program.
